Monarch Academy, a public charter school with locations in Glen Burnie, Md. and Baltimore City, is operated by The Children's Guild Institute and guided by its philosophy of Transformation Education (TranZed). The school design and curriculum emphasizes a rigorous, project-based instructional program that integrates the arts across the curriculum. Monarch Academy Glen Burnie opened in 2009 and will grow to serve students in kindergarten through grade eight. Monarch Academy Baltimore will open in fall 2011 and will admit students from grades kindergarten to fourth grade in its first three years and will grow to serve students in kindergarten through eighth grade.
Monarch Academy Glen Burnie's instructional approach is rooted in Expeditionary Learning, a model for comprehensive school reform that emphasizes high achievement through active learning, character growth and teamwork. Students spend much of their time engaged in learning expeditions that are in-depth studies of a single topic that engage students in comprehensive research of a subject, hands-on learning experiences and unique presentations that address authentic audiences in the community.
Monarch Academy Baltimore City's mission is to provide a school culture that produces students who think critically, problem solve creatively, become self-disciplined, know how to learn, and who understand that the goal of life is to serve a cause larger than one’s self.
