The Children's Guild announced that Sheela Murthy, founder and president of the Murthy Law Firm, will be the recipient of its 2012 Sadie Award, which will be presented at its annual Cabaret for Kids black-tie gala. This event will take place on Saturday, April 14, 2012, at Valley Mansion in Hunt Valley, Md. and proceeds will support the programs and services of The Children’s Guild.

Dr. Andrew Ross, president and CEO of The Children’s Guild Institute, a nonprofit child-serving organization, was named Innovator of the Year by The Daily Record. The award recognizes leaders who have had a positive effect and tremendous impact in Maryland.

The Children’s Guild Institute, a nonprofit child-serving organization, received a $2,500 grant from RBC Foundation-USA, which provides community funding on behalf of RBC Wealth Management. The grant will fund project-based learning programs at The Children’s Guild Institute’s Monarch Academy Public Charter Schools in Baltimore and Glen Burnie, Md.

The Children's Guild named Gladys Graham chief operating officer of charter schools overseeing Monarch Academy, which includes two charter schools, one in Anne Arundel County and one in Baltimore City. In addition, she will design and conduct staff development and training for The Children's Guild charter and special needs schools.

Children’s Guild Special Event Coordinator Berit Killingstad, who has more than 25 years of experience in education, graduated from Leadership-Baltimore County. Leadership-Baltimore County seeks to prepare participants for leadership positions on boards and provide the foundation for personal and career growth.

William Purnell was elected chairman of the board of The Children’s Guild Institute, the parent company of three nonprofit child-serving organizations in Maryland. Purnell is an audit partner with KPMG, one of the largest accounting and professional service firms in the world.

BALTIMORE/GLEN BURNIE/CHILLUM, Md.—The Children’s Guild announced at its Cabaret for Kids gala honoring Frank and Janet Kelly that in recognition of the Kelly’s generous donation to the Guild to help children with autism, its new autism center will be called The Janet and Frank Kelly Autism Center at The Children’s Guild. It was also announced that The Children’s Guild has developed an affiliation with the University of North Carolina School of Medicine TEACCH program. TEACCH (Treatment and Education of Autistic and Communication related Handicapped Children) is an evidenced-based service, training, and research program for individuals with autism spectrum disorders.

BALTIMORE, Md.—The Children’s Guild will launch The Autism Center at The Children’s Guild with a one-day conference, “Strategies and Supports for Working with Youth on the Autism Spectrum,” April 26 from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The conference supports The Autism Center at The Children’s Guild’s mission of providing services for children and youth on the autism spectrum and their families.

Children’s Guild staff and students will wear blue to raise autism awareness as part of Autism Speaks’ Light It Up Blue campaign, a unique global initiative to celebrate World Autism Awareness Day and help raise funds and awareness of autism as a growing public health crisis. April is National Autism Awareness Month.

“Shrek The Musical” actress Danielle Soibelman will visit The Children’s Guild to sing for students and present a behind-the-scenes look at “Shrek The Musical.” As part of her presentation, Children’s Guild students will learn about the musical’s costumes and receive Shrek ears.

The Children’s Guild promoted Steve Howe to vice president of Children’s Services. Howe, who has more than 30 years of experience in family services, leads The Children’s Guild’s admissions, three therapeutic group homes, treatment foster care program and Family Help Center, which supports children struggling with stress and traumatic events in the community and 26 public schools.

The Children’s Guild Vice President of Children’s Services Steve Howe joined the board of the Foster Family-based Treatment Association (FFTA), an organization of 400 treatment foster care providers in North America established to define and refine Treatment Foster Care practices. Howe will serve on the executive committee of the board as chair of the Council of Chapter Chairs. He has served on the FFTA board and presented at FFTA conferences in the past.

The Children’s Guild named Dr. Silvia O. Williams medical director of the Family Help Center and staff psychiatrist. Williams will lead the clinical work of The Children’s Guild’s Family Help Center, which supports children struggling with stress and traumatic events in 26 schools in Baltimore and Anne Arundel counties.

Families can trick-or-treat this year in a safe, fun festival atmosphere. The Children’s Guild will celebrate Halloween with a free Community Fall Fest Saturday, Oct. 30, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Baltimore campus in the Parkville area of Baltimore (6902 McClean Blvd.). The festival will feature free face painting, trick-or-treating, music and children’s activities, as well as free food including barbecue chicken and salads.
