Monarch Academy Baltimore Hosts Hungry Harvest SNAP Market

March 15, 2018 by The Children's Guild

The Hungry Harvest SNAP Market was a HUGE success. The SNAP Market was held on Wednesday, March 14th from 2:00pm-4:00pm in the food pantry at The Children’s Guild’s Monarch Academy Baltimore Public Charter School.

The Hungry Harvest SNAP Market program rescues produce that stores are unable to sell and they sell the produce to communities at a discounted price.

There was a big turnout for the SNAP Market program in the community. Many of the attendees carted away several bags of fresh seasonal fruits and vegetables for their families at a reduced price. The SNAP Market was open to all of the surrounding community and all of the Monarch Academy Baltimore staff and their families.

We look forward to hosting another great Hungry Harvest SNAP Market at Monarch Academy Baltimore on April 25th.

The Children’s Guild’s Monarch Academy Baltimore Students Showcase Their Knowledge of Whole Brain Teaching

March 13, 2018 by The Children's Guild

The second-grade students in Teacher, Mrs. Speer’s Language Arts class at Monarch Academy Baltimore Public Charter School, shared their knowledge of Whole Brain Teaching and inferencing skills with the Monarch Academy Baltimore board members and administrative staff at the board meeting on Thursday, March 8th.

Mrs. Speer began the Whole Brain Teaching literacy lesson by reading a story to the second-grade students, Blessing Ukah, Destiney Washington, Nelah Wallace, Lenaiyah Neal, and Layla Neal. Mrs. Speer then pointed out how to use inferencing to compare and contrast two versions of a story and then asked the students to demonstrate their knowledge of the literacy lesson by using inferencing skills to compare and contrast two different versions of the fairytale stories “Sumorella” and “Cinderella Penguin.”

It was an educational night for all, and the kids had a great time.

Congratulations to Mrs. Speer and her second-grade students on a great presentation.

Monarch Academy Baltimore 8th Grade Students Present Science Project

February 23, 2018 by The Children's Guild

The eighth-grade students in Ms. Chambers’ Science class at Monarch Academy Baltimore Public Charter School presented their science projects to the administrative staff and board members at the Monarch Academy Baltimore board meeting on Thursday, February 8th.

The science students began work at the beginning of the school year and learned about lab norms and the scientific method by using gummy bears to discover Osmosis and determine why it had occurred. In this experiment, the students placed gummy bears in four different beakers that contained water, vinegar, baking soda, and salt water for 24 hours. After the 24 hours, the students investigated what happened to each gummy bear in the solution and learned about why changes had occurred.

Next, the students learned about all of the organelles in plant and animal cells. In this part of the lab work, the students looked at an Elodea plant cell and an onion cell and investigated it in the lab to identify the different cell parts. For the eighth graders, the most fun part of the lab work was when their cheek cells were swabbed. View bulletin board photo above of the 8th-grade students’ Wanted posters.

The students completed their lab work by studying photosynthesis and cellular respiration which is how plant and animal cells obtain their energy.

After the lab work concluded, each student was required, outside of school, to conduct their own research and create a 3D Cell Model Project that displayed the types of organelles (animal vs. plant cell) that were covered in class. The students were also required to write their personal reflections based on their research.

Congratulations to Ms. Chambers’ Science class on a job well done.
