Cabaret for Kids 2017, The POWER behind the POWER behind the POWER, was a great success thanks to the effort and participation of hundreds of people, including attendees, sponsors, performers, staff and volunteers. A special thank you to Steve Woerner, BGE, President and COO, for his involvement in making the event entertaining and well-attended to benefit The Children’s Guild.
Together, we raised over $255,000 for the kids!
Invest in the Mission
For those who were unable to attend, there is still time to Invest in the Mission!
At Cabaret for Kids, we asked for contributions to directly fund three initiatives.
1. Transport for Monarch Academy Baltimore for tutoring and mentoring sessions four times a week for 20 weeks at Morgan State University enhancing their opportunities for educational success. The mentoring program provides our Baltimore charter school 5th-8th graders an exceptional experience and one they never experienced before. Our students have the opportunity to interact with college students and visit a college campus for four hours a week for 10 weeks, providing them a vision of college life and answering for them the question of “Why go to college?” Additionally, 31 Monarch middle school students come to Morgan State twice a week for tutoring by Morgan State students. The cost of a bus is $1200 a week
2. Tuition for 80 children at our Summer Camp Program. The Summer Camp program is for children in grades 1-6. Children spend half the day on academics and the other half of the day enjoying fun camp activities such as swimming, field trips, sports, games, etc. Many of our students are two or more grades behind when they come to our school and these academics are important in helping them catch up. The camp also provides breakfast and lunch for the children. The cost of tuition is $650 per child.
3. Instruments for our new Monarch Academy Annapolis Campus, opening in Fall 2017. The newest addition to the Monarchs will be an International Baccalaureate program with a strong focus on arts integration for children in grades K-5. It is a very diverse school, both socio-economically and culturally. There are many needs in a new school and among them are musical instruments so that children whose parents cannot afford to rent an instrument still have the opportunity to learn to play a musical instrument. Needed are 10 drum sets at ($200 a set), 10 violins at ($525 each), five violas at ($325 each), five flutes at ($1,340 each) and (two clarinets at $1,275 each.)
